A. Who was the first man to got to the South Pole? Listen, read and check your answers.
The first men to reach the Geographic South Pole were the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
B. Now look at the highlighted words in the text and find their definitions in a dictionary.
explorer- someone who travels to places where no one has ever been in order to find out what is there.
vessel - a large boat or a ship.
sledges - an object used for travelling over snow and ice with long, narrow strips of wood or metal under it instead of wheels. It can be either a low frame, or a vehicle like a carriage pulled by horses or dogs.
blizzards - a severe snow storm with strong winds.
expedition - an organized journey for a particular purpose.
route - a particular way or direction between places.
C. Read again and answer the questions.
1.How many men did Scott have in his team? - There were sixteen men in his team.
2. What was the name of Amundsen's ship? - The ship was called Fram.
3. How did Amundsen travel across the ice? - He took a risk and tried to reach the South Pole by another route.
4. What did Scott find at the South Pole? - He found a Norwegian flag at the South Pole.
5. What happened to Scott and his team on the way back? - They all died.
D. Discuss the following. Why do you think Scott didn't manage to get to the South Pole first?
I think they took the wrong route and it took much time.
