The sleep dirt challenge
Every year, during the last week of January, the people of Lakeside, a town in Scotland, hold a sleep out in Lake Drive Park. (1) (e) This event helps raise money for people in need, and it also lets people experience how difficult it is to be homeless.
The way that it works is simple. (2) (b) Those Who sign up for the sleep out challenge must sleep outside in their sleeping bags for the whole night. Others can support the challenge by donating money, which goes to helping homeless people in the city. Volunteers can also help by bringing hot drinks and food to keep the sleepers warm. Donations like those are welcomed because January nights in Scotland are usually very cold. (3) (a) Last year, the sleep out raised £6.500 for people in need. That's a good amount, but those who take part in the challenge believe that the most important part of the event is that it helps everyone keep in mind that many people sleep outside every night. (4) (d) It also helps them realise how hard it is to rely only on the kindness of other people for food and shelter.
