Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a classic love story. The 1965 film was adapted from the novel (1) that was written in 1911 by Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi. The basic plot is the story of Ivan and Marichka (2) who fall in love, despite belonging to enemy Hutsul families. After Marichka's tragic death, Ivan marries Palagna but he never gets over Marichka, (3) who is his true love. Director Serhii Parajanov showed the Carpathian Mountains and forests as a land of fantasy, (4) where people have a special relationship with nature and one another.
