7. Describe a book as an edition.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
The cover of the book shows the title Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and the author’s name, J.K. Rowling. It also usually has an illustration connected with the story, for example, Harry riding a broomstick or standing near the Hogwarts Express.
The title page repeats the title and the author’s name. It also gives the name of the publisher (for example, Bloomsbury in the UK edition or Scholastic in the US edition) and the year of publication. The first edition came out in 1997.
The table of contents lists the chapters of the book. From it we can see the topics the book covers, such as Harry’s first meeting with Hagrid, his arrival at Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat, Quidditch matches, and the discovery of the secret of the Philosopher’s Stone. So, the cover, title page, and contents together tell us who wrote the book, when and where it was published, and what the main parts of the story are about.
7. b) Give your opinion if this information is valuable to the reader.
Yes, this information is valuable to the reader. The author’s name helps us know who created the book and maybe find other works by the same writer. The year of publication shows how old or modern the book is. The publisher’s name is important because it often guarantees the quality of the edition. The table of contents is very useful as it helps the reader understand what topics the book covers and quickly find the needed chapter. All this information makes it easier to choose, use, and enjoy the book.
8. Work in groups. Read and discuss the question.
I think both e–books and print books have their advantages. An e–book is very convenient because you can carry hundreds of books in one small device. You don’t need bookshelves, and you can download a new book in seconds. It is also cheaper and more ecological, as it saves paper.
However, a print book feels more real and special. You can hold it in your hands, turn the pages, and even enjoy the smell of a new book. It is easier to read for long hours without getting tired eyes from a screen. Personally, I prefer print books because they give me more comfort and pleasure while reading. But I also use e–books when I travel, because they are light and practical.
9. Role–play the situations. a) Work in pairs.
A: Hi! Guess what—I’ve just finished a fascinating book I borrowed from the library.
B: Really? What book is it?
A: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. It’s full of magic, friendship, and exciting adventures. I couldn’t stop reading it!
B: That sounds amazing. I’ve heard a lot about it but never read it.
A: You definitely should! I’m on my way to return it now. Why don’t you come with me and borrow it for yourself?
B: Great idea! I’d love to read it. Let’s go to the library together.
9. b) Work in a group of three.
A (student): Hi! We came to the library, but we can’t decide what book to choose. Could you please help us?
C (librarian): Of course! Here are three books you might like. The first is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling — it’s full of magic and adventures. The second is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain — a classic about childhood, friendship, and fun on the Mississippi River. And the third is The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling — a story about a boy raised by wolves and his life in the jungle.
B (student): Wow, they all sound interesting! I like adventure stories, so The Jungle Book could be a good choice.
A: Yes, but Harry Potter also sounds great. I’ve heard a lot about it and want to try something magical.
B: Hmm, true. Maybe we should take Harry Potter this time and The Jungle Book next time?
A: Good idea! Let’s do that.
C (librarian): Perfect choice! I’ll register Harry Potter for you. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

10. Find several blurbs for 3–4 books on the Internet. Decide which blurb attracts you to each book the most. Explain your choice.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Blurb:
“Set in a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called…”
Why it stands out:
This opening plunges right into the unsettling premise—a "terrifying reality TV show" where children fight for survival. Its blunt, dramatic tone immediately grabs attention and sets high emotional stakes. It doesn’t just promise drama—it promises danger and social commentary, which I find powerfully compelling.
11. a) Read and name the kind of writing below.
That piece of text is a report. It has all the features of report writing: A clear purpose (to present survey results). A results section with facts, figures, and percentages. A conclusion that sums up the findings and gives a final comment.
11. b) Read again, then ask and answer the questions in pairs
1. What is this report based on? It is based on the results of a survey about young people’s reading habits.
2. What is the first paragraph ‘Purpose’ about? It explains the goal of the report, which is to present information about how young people read.
3. How many paragraphs does the body consist of? The body consists of two paragraphs.
4. In what ways are the results presented? The results are presented in percentages, numbers, and short explanations about genres and authors.
5. What is the last part of the document like? The last part is the conclusion, where the writer sums up the results and gives a final opinion that books still remain important despite technology.
